How I almost DIDN'T get my current job

My last two posts were super long because, well, there was SO much to catch you up on. How did I get here? Why did I leave? From here on out, my posts will be much shorter. This week I want to offer a little motivation, and teach you a lesson about how I almost didn't get my current job. I also want to add a little disclaimer....I was a math teacher, not an english teacher. I will put commas where they do not belong & I will say things that may not make sense some times....Heck I am from the south so just bare with me please. Onto the good stuff!

After spotting a Customer Service Representative position as I so desprately scrolled through Indeed for the 1 millionth time, I read one bullet point and just kept on scrolling. I hesitated due to a daunting job description bullet point. ONE BULLET POINT. It took a LinkedIn message from an outside salesman to spark my interest. Against initial reservations, I applied, nailed the interview which felt more like a conversation than anything, and found that the challenging aspect I feared became the highlight of my day.

I am sure you are wondering what that bullet point was. It said something along the lines of "Assist with counter sales as needed." You see, I work for a large industrial distribution company. We have customers come in sometimes when they are in a bind and looking for a certain part. 9/10 times they have the part they are looking for with them which makes it easier to find. Any way, the idea of counter sales scared me. But I also had this idea in my head that I was beyond that. When I first read the job description, I knew nothing about the counter sales. But in my brain, I was like, I have a freaking master's degree....I am not working a cash register. But these counter sales are so much more than that. It's one of the few times a day that I get to interact with a customer face to face. Most of the time its through email or over the phone. Counter sales have become a favorite part of my day. I learn so much from the counter sales, that you will often find me running to the counter to help because I am eager to learn.

Moral of the story: don't let one intimidating detail deter you. Apply, interview, and you might just discover your dream career. In my case, it was the best move I ever made. I will forever be grateful for the Outside Salesman that found me on LinkedIn and took a shot on me.
